10 Tips to Help you Survive a Kitchen Remodel

So you’re Remodeling your kitchen…

With over 25 years of experience behind us, we know that remodeling your kitchen is no walk in the park. It’s a big investment of your time and money. An investment that is so worth the wait, there’s nothing like walking into your dream kitchen for the first time. Remodeling is messy, a bit chaotic, and it can be stressful if you’re not properly prepared.

We’ve put together this list of tips to help you survive your kitchen remodel. If you have an understanding of what to expect and prepare to live a little differently for a short while, you will have a much easier experience waiting for your new kitchen to be completed.

Dump it all in:

We recommend using your crock pot as often as you can during your remodel. You can prepare for this by creating “dump bag” meals that you can store in the freezer until you are ready to use them. The great thing about crockpots is that you can create a delicious meal without creating a big mess of dishes to clean. You can further reduce the amount of dishes by using disposable crockpot liners. We love the idea of set + forget, stress free meals during your remodel. Keeping it simple is key.

Just Grillin’

If you’re remodeling during the warmer months, this is the perfect opportunity to fire up the grill and enjoy the outdoors! You probably won’t have access to your stove for a chunk of your remodel, so this is a convenient time to enjoy all of the BBQ fixings. Have you tried Grilled Pizza yet? If not, we highly recommend using this time to give it a try!

Scrub a dub…

You might need to purchase a washing tub! You’re going to need a temporary washing station for the dirty dishes and utensils. You’ll want to have space to wash and dry these dishes. Do them as you go, do not allow them to pile up - this will create extra mess-stress that you can avoid. There will most likely be a brief period where your kitchen sink is out of commission. Plan ahead!

Plan to eat out:

We are surrounded by so many great restaurants, food trucks, and bakeries. When planning your grocery list and food budget, consider eating out a few times. You’ll be supporting local and enjoying a break from the remodel happening at home. It’s a win-win!

Make a plan:

Plan out your remodel as best as you can. There will likely be unexpected hiccups, mentally prepare for that too. You’ll want to take your time decluttering, packing, and storing the items that will need to be removed from your kitchen prior to the remodel. What items will you need for your temporary kitchen and washing space? How will you keep things organized? What ideas would you like to see implemented in your new space? What restaurants would you like to visit? How will you be funding your remodel and any potential change orders? How will this temporary change in your home impact your family’s every day life until the project is completed?

Out with the old…

As you go through the items in your kitchen to store them for the remodel, consider donating items that no longer serve you. You’ll want your newly renovated kitchen to feel clean and clutter free. Declutter and donate what you can. Maybe you even have enough for a yard sale…or perhaps you’ll donate to your local thrift shop. We are proud to donate usable items from remodels to Habitat for Humanity’s Restore.

Creative Cooking

Designate a space in your home that will be free of construction related items and messes. A place where you can cook and feast on your creations. You might have to get creative. Look around your home and find the best spot to transform into your temporary kitchen. Consider availability of outlets for small appliances, proximity to the fridge, kitchenware storage, and use of water for washing.

Be flexible.

Remodeling is messy and can have unexpected delays or changes that are not within the control of you or your contractor. Be mindful of the nature of remodeling and it’s impact on your life as a homeowner. Do your best to be flexible and aware. Remain as positive as you can through the process, knowing that your dream kitchen is coming to life.

Let’s talk:

We’re listening. It is our goal to be your partner in improving your home. Good relationships are built on trust and open communication. It is so important to keep in touch during any home improvement project. Communicate your concerns and questions clearly to your contractor so that they can do their best to accommodate your needs and address any issues that may arise.

Make Memories

Use this time to visit friends and family. Have picnics in the park or head to grandma’s for dinner! You don’t need to stay home during your remodel, getting out of the house and making memories will be much more fun. You can share about your home improvement adventure and invite your friends to dine with you in your new kitchen once it’s completed. The transformation will be sure to wow them!
