7 Things Your Bathroom Isn't Telling You

When I tell prospective clients that when we do a bath remodeling project we must completely gut the bathroom down to the floor, wall, and ceiling framing they typically ask why?

Here are the reasons why:

  1. Mold and mildew – 100% of the bathrooms we have remodeled during our many years in business have had mold and/or mildew in the wall or ceiling cavities. This is a potential health issue and must be remediated.

  2. Water damage – many bathrooms have water damage around the tub walls, along the floor/tub intersection, and under the toilet. These areas must be addressed to ensure that new fixtures and finishes will perform properly.

  3. Structural damage – we often find structurally compromised floor framing. This is almost always caused by overcutting joists to accommodate piping during previous remodeling.

  4. Electrical work – the electrical wiring must be brought up to today’s codes. Gutting the bathroom makes it easier for our electricians to complete their work and find potential hazards.

  5. Plumbing – the existing piping may be leaking, cracked, or worn. These defects may cause anything from slow draining fixtures to noxious sewer gas leaking into your home.

  6. Insulation – with open walls and ceilings we can install new high R-value insulation to help you save energy.

  7. Ventilation – we install new high efficiency bathroom ventilation to ensure that moist humid air is removed directly to the outside of your home, so mold and mildew won’t build up.

Does it cost more to remodel a bathroom this way? Absolutely. Will it cost even more to remodel your bathroom a 2nd time after you encounter any of the problems above? Absolutely.
