Foggy Windows or Doors?

Foggy windows or doors? You’re heating dollars are going out the window.

There’s a chill in the morning air, and like it or not, you’ll soon be turning the heat up.  If you have foggy window or door glass, your heating dollars will be going right out those windows and doors.  Modern windows are made with insulated glass consisting of 2-3 individual panes of glass with a sealed airspace in between.  Typically, the glass itself is coated with materials to increase its energy efficiency, and the airspace between the glass is filled with an inert gas, also to increase efficiency.  Over time the seal on the insulated glass may fail allowing the gas to escape and air to get in.  That air has moisture in it and when it condenses on the inside surface of the glass, you get fog.  Additionally, because the seal has been compromised, the energy efficiency of the window is gone, and you’ll lose heat through that window much more than others.  Don’t panic, you may not need to replace the whole window.  Most manufacturers warranty their glass against seal failure for 20 years, so the first step is to identify the manufacturer.  Look for a name on the hardware or open the window and look for a label on the inside of the top jamb or frame.  If you’re successful, you can call the manufacturer directly and find out if the window is still under warranty.  Some warranties are pro-rated and only cover the cost of the glass, so you’ll need to install it yourself or hire a contractor.  If the glass is out of warranty, you still may be able to have a company replace just the glass rather than the whole window.
